Romans 8:14 " For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear....but you have received the spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father."
There are a lot of different names used in the scriptures that are actually the Names of God. He is Jehovah Jireh...which means that He is our Provider. He is Jehovah Rophe, who is our Healer. There are many more, but the one that really stands out is Abba. This is one of the most significant names that speaks to us about how God deals with His children. The word "Abba" itself is an Aramaic word, and it would most closely in our English language be compared with the word "daddy". It signifies a deeply close relationship that a Father has with his child, and the intimate trust that a child would be able to put in his " daddy".
We, as born again believers, have a right to call Him Abba...to walk in that closeness with Him on a daily basis, to think of Him as the "daddy" Whose lap you would sit on and pour your heart out to, while at the same time, He is loving and protecting you...because you are His.
It's also life changing to understand fully what it means to be an adopted son or daughter of God. It is probably the highest privilege imaginable in this life. It means that we can live confidently and walk boldly because of the Indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, who directs our steps and the path that we take. Children who were adopted during the time this passage was written were given all the full benefits that their full blooded siblings had. They were joint heirs. And we have been accepted, forgiven, redeemed, and sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise. Being adopted through faith in Christ is the source of our hope and the security of our future.
As we come to know the true nature of Who God is, we should be amazed that He not only allows, but encourages us to call Him Abba...Father. We are His! It was His good will to make us accepted. We have been given an inheritance through the blood of Jesus and we are sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise. We have not received a spirit of bondage that we should have anything to fear or be afraid of. We have been adopted and we can live boldly and with complete courage because our trust is not in ourselves...it is in the One who is our daddy...our Abba...our Father...and He will never fail one of His children.
