Years ago, I heard someone teach on Joshua 10:5, "Therefore, the five kings of the Amorites...the King of Jerusalem, the King of Hebron, the King of Jarmuth, the King of Lachish, and the King of Eglon, gathered themselves together and went up...they and all their hosts...and encamped before Gibeon and made war against it."
These five kings were uniting to make war on the Gibeonites, who turned to Joshua and the Israelites for help. As this teacher had studied this passage, he made an observation. The Lord quickened to his heart that the five kings represented in this story are represented in our lives today...by our five senses.
We enjoy our sense of sight...of hearing,..of taste..of smell...and of touch. We trust in the sense of what each one brings. We love to see a beautiful sunset. We enjoy listening to good music. We love to smell and then taste delicious food that has been prepared. Our five senses really are amazing!
At the same time, these five senses can also be good evangelists for unbelief. With all that is going on in the world these days, in the news and just in life...we have many opportunities to choose doubt...to begin to question what we believe...and WHO we believe. The facts that we deal with daily in the news and the world around us may not be good. But the TRUTH is that God hasn't changed. His word is still true. His promises are still true. His heart FOR you remains committed TO you. He still knows the end from the beginning, and we CAN trust Him...no matter what we may be seeing or hearing.
God IS faithful. Trust placed in Him is better than facts placed in our five senses, that will only bring confusion to our hearts.
In the story, five of Joshua's captains put their foot on the necks of the five kings. Then Joshua told the captains..."Fear not, nor be dismayed. Be strong and of a good courage...for thus shall The Lord do to ALL your enemies against whom you fight". Beloved, when you are in a battle...no matter what kind of battle it is...remember that you can put your foot on the neck of unbelief. You can put your foot on the neck of doubt. You can put your foot on the neck of fear. You can out your foot on the neck of confusion....because you have a God Who is faithful, and in Whom you can trust. There is nothing that can come into our lives that can ever change the goodness of our God!
