Hebrews 6:19 "Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which entereth into that within the veil."
The author of Hebrews was writing to people who were facing persecution because of their faith. Some may have even been tempted to turn away from Christ and to return to Judaism. The people are being earnestly persuaded to persevere in their walk with Jesus...in their faith. The author is trying to instill hope...but not just any hope...hope that is based on the promises of God, and therefore can not fail.
An anchor, as we know, goes down deep into the depths of the water. The anchor spoken of here goes up...into the heavens...behind the veil, where Jesus, our High Priest, is seated. An anchor firmly attached to a ship will keep it steady, even in the worst storm. The ferocious waves we can see really are on the surface....but the anchor sits calmly on a much deeper level.
Our souls (mind, will, emotion), like those waves we can see, can tend to be tossed about with circumstances and uncertainties...but our hope in Jesus anchors our worn and weathered souls to Him. We are kept secure and able to navigate the troubled waters of life during the worst storms imaginable. Our Anchor helps us to stay on course, so that we don't drift...or sink.
Whether we are in the storm, or in the calm, we need to be anchored to the lover of our soul. When we take hold of Him and the hope that He offers, we will always be steady and secure, even in the most turbulent waters.
