If you're like any other believer, you want to understand the scriptures... But if you're like any other believer, you've probably read them at times and they didn't really edify you, you just read them...
Jesus brought understanding of the scriptures to His disciples by pointing out that the scriptures are pointing to His death and resurrection (the cross, the object of our faith).
We typically categorized the bible as the "Word of God", and that's not necessarily wrong, but the bible is really revealing the "Word" to us...
Jesus told a group of Jews in John 5:38 that they have not His Father's "Word" abiding in them because they don't believe Him Who God sent; but yet these Jews definitely had the scriptures abiding in them, so Jesus couldn't have been referring to the scriptures when He was referring to the "Word".
The "Word of God" is the message of the cross, the message of what God did for man to not only save man, but to reveal Himself and have relationship with man, and if we're not careful, just like these Jews did, we can make the bible an idol.
The bible is NOT the object of our faith. The bible is revealing the object of our faith... the glorious sacrifice of Jesus the Christ, and when we understand that, and read the "Word" through that scope, it will come alive to us, and we'll be able to properly discern it.
If we lift the written scriptures above the literal sacrifice of Jesus, we make the bible an idol...
This is an eye opener!
