Psalm 27:1 "The Lord is my light, and my salvation. Of whom shall I fear?"
I've really grown to love words. I know. That sounds like a strange statement. What I mean is that I love looking into the original meanings of words in the Greek or Hebrew. I find that often a verse will take on a much deeper meaning that I wouldn't have otherwise seen.
"The Lord is my light." The word "light" means a concrete illumination. Not only is The Lord lighting our way, and illuminating our path, but He is the bright, clear light of instruction, prosperity, and even happiness! He wants us to be successful and He leads us on a direct path and shows us the way.
..."and my salvation"... The word "salvation" here is a different word than the one we often find in scripture for salvation. Here it is the word "eysa" which means liberty, freedom, deliverance, safety, and victory. If you are in a situation where you feel held back, held down, or even oppressed..The Lord is your salvation. He is your deliverance. He is your safety, and He will lead you through...to victory!
"Of whom shall I fear"...the word here for "fear" means to dread or terrify...to be made afraid. Beloved, this verse is letting us know that we don't have to fear anyone...because The Lord IS our light. He IS our salvation. It's not that He might be! It's that He IS! Another version even refers to Him as our stronghold, which is a tower or fortress. It's a fortified refuge where one can be protected from the enemy. This is what your God is to you! When you are dealing with difficult or challenging people, The Lord is your place of refuge! You have nothing to fear because this refuge...this tower...this strong HOLD...lives...in YOU!
Remind yourself of it. Say it out loud. The Lord IS my light. He illuminates my path in life. He IS my happiness! He has made provision for every area of my life to be successful. The Lord IS my salvation! He IS my freedom, my deliverance, and my safety. He IS my victory! Whom shall I fear? No one! Nothing! Because The Lord IS my place of refuge. He IS the strong HOLD in my life.
If you read on further in this passage, David said that when his enemies came, they stumbled and fell. Beloved, remind yourself today of this truth. ..and as you speak it out loud, let the words sink back down into your own ears, into your soul. You will not only be comforted...you will have confidence to face whatever you need to face today...not because of anything you've done, but because you can completely trust in and rely on Jesus!
